At one time, it consisted of a popular Native American trail that ran through the county. In 1792, the state built a frontier fort in what would become the city of Winder, GA. The fort was named Fort Yargo, which is now a state park.  Later, Barrow County, GA would be the scene of a Union defeat during Sherman’s Atlanta, GA Campaign.
